Machine Translation Post-Editing from the Freelancers’ Perspective – A Survey Report

Although Machine Translation Post-Editing (MTPE) assignments have been common for a few years now in the translation industry, there are no widely recognised best practices as yet to ensure the viability of such projects for all parties involved.
Despite translators’ crucial role in providing the necessary linguistic input, their point of view often remains invisible, with language service providers rather focusing on the time and cost savings they can achieve via MT implementation. But how do freelance linguists see post-editing projects and their own changing role in the industry?
This is the question the current survey sought to investigate through an online questionnaire completed by 166 professional translators working in 87 language combinations in total, with most of the language combinations including Western and Central European languages to and from English and German.
